1) Is there evidence to support the USA’s belief in a God given destiny?
There are historians that claim many people of the USA believe the country had an important destiny to fulfil. The US began as a refuge for many religious groups, which were identified by their belief in God and maintained moral principles. To what extent do the Americans believe that the USA has a “destiny?” My university texts from the 1950’s explored the history of the country up to the 1950’s and I started my search for some evidence. I have heard Patriots often express their belief in God and their desire to do his will, as they fight against those who would destroy their right to serve God and their Constitution.
My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Yahweh; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee. The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity. Psa 5:3-5
When the British Colonies in North America defeated Britain in the War of Independence the colonies severed all ties to Britain. This does raise a few queries about the situation related to the Merchants of Tarshish and the Young Lions mentioned numerous times in this web site in relation to the prophecy in Ezekiel 38 in the last days. America is the eldest of the young lions as the first British Colony. George 111 failed in crimes in violation of the constitution. The central focus was on “legality,” and the law and this meant that “the USA was born in an atmosphere of legal rather than philosophical debate”, and can not be aligned with the French Revolution and the cry of liberty, equality and fraternity. The historians all agree that legality and law were the driving forces for the break from the mother/father country. The personal motto of Jefferson rang clear, “Rebellion to tyrants and obedience to God” (Daniel Boorstin, “The Genius of American Politics” Chicago 1953 p.88)
I have not come across discussion that may be of significance in relation to this sudden rupture. Britain was ruled by Germanic sovereigns and this has continued up until today. To what extent would Britain now be like Tarshish? Or would the USA as the oldest Lion take over the position? This I believe had enormous consequences for the USA. There has not been an Anglo Saxon on the British throne since Tudor times. (Elizabeth’s mother Scottish, Father Germanic). The British were no doubt humiliated by their defeat by the colony and the loss of the wealth it would have brought to Britain.
What do the historians see as features of the American Experience?
Boorstin wrote: “It may be something of a shock that the American Revolution did not produce a single important treatise on political theory...but positive ideas and attitudes which have done much to reinforce our sense of ‘givenness’. Many influential scholars have cast our revolution in the mold of the French revolution. It has never been quite clear to me why historians would not have found our revolution significant enough merely as a victory of constitutionalism. Our national birth certificate is a Declaration of Independence. (pp.66,68)
Was it an affirmation of British institutions and the importance of Law which was then passed on to the USA? The slogan that appears most appropriate to this Revolution is “no taxation without representation” and Boorstin also quotes from a remark made by H.G Wells. “The concept of ‘destiny has been an ever deepening current in American thought. Conviction that America has a mission to mankind was perhaps never stronger than today” We have concepts here of the importance and recognition of a mission, a destiny, legality and Law in the USA,
D.Potter agrees with Boorstin about the unusual economic abundance, the influence of the frontier and the “definitively extroverted” character in the people with greater emphasis on “thinking and intuition than on feeling.” (p68) He also examines the changes in the USA which, through abundance, saw a great advance in lifestyle and inventions that caused changes faster than in any other country, (p.69)
The opportunity of “equality” was emancipation from a system of status and class. The individual could make his own “place in society and was not restricted by status as it gave an individual universal opportunity to traverse through a scale that traversed many levels”. (p,96) There was the freedom to develop one’s potentialities.
The most interesting thing he observed by the 1930’s was the emergence of social control, advertising and indoctrination through the media. This is very relevant for today as we see how this media control has crept unobtrusively into America. This powerful force was possibly unleashed before 1871. Also he saw that barriers in society were developing related to education, occupation and area of residence. He then looks at the influence of the emergence of “corporations”. He believed that the “ripest recruits for Marxism” are the “idealists who loved the doctrine of ‘equality’ too well”. He sees the “organised group and corporative membership ties man’s aspirations to the power and purposes of the organised group that status gives.” He concludes that there has been a pathological turn that has contributed to the rise of fascism and Nazism, In other words, the Corporations were breaking down the traditional work opportunities for mobile individuals. In fact he has an amazing insight into the beginning of the role of Corporations in the USA and world wide. (David Potter “People of Plenty, Chicago 1954 pages 69-106)
Another historian, Max Lerner was also thought provoking. He wrote, “The sharp change in the attitude (of the USA) toward Europe came with the two world wars… when it was no longer the ‘father demanding obedience and exerting his authority but an endangered civilization...America broke through the isolationist sheath to aid western Europe in two great wars and afterward it helped to rebuild Europe’s economic strength”. The USA had saved the UK twice.
This demonstrated that a positive link between the US and UK still existed with the eldest Young Lion in a position of strength in rescuing the Merchant from defeat in the two wars.
The Americans saved Australia (one of the young Lions) from the Japanese who had bombed Darwin and Bondi. With troops and weapons and cheerfulness they gave a small population, comfort and hope of safety while its troops were abroad helping the British. He also considers the “dynamism” evident in the American people as he asks “What were the crucial elements in the American experience that gave it this quality (dynamism)? There was the fact of a fresh start, with rich resources by men who carried with them a passion for freedom and an aversion to authoritarianism. There was a vast expanse of a continent and the richness of a racial and ethnic mixture”. (America as a Civilization, Max Lerner New York 1957 p.27, p.48)
A Look at the USA through the eyes of Visitors to the USA in the early 1800’s
D.J Boorstin in the ‘Genius of American Politics, page 144” gives us a view of the role of religion in the US in the early 1800’s.
“Mrs Trollope visited this country in 1828, she was already amazed by our sectarianism...she was shocked to see Americans “ insisting upon having each a little separate banner , embroidered with a device of their own imagining. The whole people appear to be divided into an almost endless variety of of religious factions… Episcopalian, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, Calvinist, Baptist, Quaker, Swedenborgian, universalist, Dankar and innumerable others emerging out of these.”
There were also Masons, Jesuits, Methodists and Campbellites. This was an age of religious freedom, enthusiasm and searching for understanding. The population was diverse and many had fled from persecution in many countries. It was an age of enquiry, a ‘Reformation’.
Dr Thomas without any church association was another British person, and scholar of Bible prophecy. He proved that Jews would return to their homeland Israel, the hope of the coming kingdom of God, the importance of baptism and the rise of Russia. He had explained the meaning of the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation and the minor prophets. He wrote five volumes explaining the historical significance of the Revelation. He had journeyed to the USA and spent about four decades in the country experiencing the religious ‘Reformation’ travelling all over the USA, walking, on horse, on horse and cart, sailing along rivers and finally by train, expounding the scriptures to large and small audiences throughout all of the USA. Around 1840 he wrote that there could be an interesting and possible outcome and mission for the USA;
“All that is worth preservation...has been naturalised in these United States; so that if Europe with all its purtances were to be blotted out tomorrow, the surviving nations would still advance in their career of social improvement. Hence the mission of the United States is to defend and preserve the civilization of the age from extinction in the transition of the old world from its present state to the Age of the Kingdom of God. This transition period is a time of sore trouble, the time of God’s judgement on Europe because of its blasphemy, superstition and crime.” (From Dr Thomas’ personal writings.)
Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands: Sing forth the honour of his name: make his praise glorious. Say unto God, How terrible art thou in thy works! through the greatness of thy power shall thine enemies submit themselves unto thee. All the earth shall worship thee, and shall sing unto thee; they shall sing to thy name. Selah. (Psalms 66:1-4 )
In the early 1840’s after spending a year in Louisville Dr Thomas records “ riots were prevailing to an alarming extent in Philadelphia in consequence of the popular indignation against the Romanists” and this suggested to the doctor, who wrote articles for a local journal, the subject of an article the ‘Nature and tendency of Popery in a Democratic Republic’. He showed “Popery was a venomous serpent and that its patronage was fruitful of danger to a free country and calculated to destroy the vitals of society.” It is to be noted that in another observation he saw that Jesuits and Masons were coming into the country and entering all areas of judiciary, government and society and at that time there existed a Jesuit College at Bardstown and he witnessed money exchanged in relation to the election of a candidate. The serpent had penetrated Europe for centuries.
Seeds of corruption and danger of the ‘venomous serpent’ , were being planted in the USA in the 1840’s and he had detected a possible future role, a mission, for the USA but he had also warned of danger as immigration was changing. (“Life and Work Dr J Thomas” by R Roberts,1873, p99.
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which Yahweh (Elohim) had made. Genesis 3:1)
The power of this entity is represented in the Book of Revelation as a Harlot and the seven heads and ten horns indicate from other references in the book to its place of origin and power, Rome. It was the warning that Dr Thomas was giving about the Romanists and Jesuits. The church of Rome had a long history of cruelty and persecution of any dissenters to its dogma and power throughout Europe for centuries and the USA had appeared free from its grasp but was the USA in danger now?
And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. [6] And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great astonishment. (Revelation of John 17:1-6 )
The historians reveal facts related to the nature of the USA experience, some warnings are given and some dangers in the path of the future of the nation are already perceived by the 1950’s.
The Power of Corporations
Max Lerner took a close look at the power and rise of corporations by the 1950’s. These were to have a huge effect on industry and all areas of production and bring many changes to the lives of the ordinary people. Also politics were greatly affected. The rich would grow richer and the ordinary citizen poorer. He gives a simple and straight forward assessment and description of the Corporative body.
“The Corporations have become, in a sense, private governments. Their decisions influence the size and distribution of the national product’ the channeling of investment, the levels of investment, the levels of employment and purchasing capacity of the workers. In effect they levy taxes and make alliances with foreign corporations in cartel operations, operating basically for private purposes, with public consequences secondary, they can crowd out competitors, divide the market, keep profits high, determine price levels and production volume.” (Pp287-288)
He goes on to say,“What can be said of corporate control is that it is rarely wielded by the majority of stockholders, but by powerful overlapping oligarchies and insiders” (p. 294)
A number writers of his generation have noted that the head men of these corporates were emerging as Corporate Signeurs and their position, wealth and power had much in common with the frame of medieval society. The Democrats were successful leaders in the fight for the corporate bodies and the Republicans legislatively were effective as lobbies and pressure groups. Politically they operated to fight the “creeping socialism of the Democrats and maintain orthodoxy.”
In 1800 Congress moved to Washington and in 1871 self government was granted to the Washingtonians, and, Washington D. C, the capital, became the place where the new Elite spent their social seasons. The fabric and control of society of the USA was rapidly changing, with the emergence of the powerful and wealthy elite and the corporations as envisaged by the historians of the 1950’s. The Democrats have been able to achieve total control over every aspect of Government, and, through the media, have indoctrinated the nation by being able to hide the truth.
