By Our Own Counsels!

28th February 2020, hej

Much of the evil of the world is caused by humans who have rejected God. It seems a core characteristic of the world, something natural, that Godless fools inherit their own foolishness, which destroys themselves.

Let us consider that some that have begun a Godless revolution, such as Trotsky, have fallen by that revolution. It may be argued that the number of Jews so clearly choosing Communism as a hope to remove anti-semitism, rather than sincerely seeking their God, were shown in no uncertain terms that it would not work, by the deaths it caused. It had to play out and fail so the whole world would witness it, as a lesson in what not to do. Marx and Darwin were both deeply troubled, by their own theories. We see also a political party in America, after having voted to remove reference to God in 2012 (nypost.com),

being destroyed from within by its supporters leaving because its adherents persecute hatefully any dissent and by internal factions where their own 'identity' politics or socialism are attacked as not extreme enough. We might note also that those with no personal relationship with the God of the Bible are more likely to be unhappy, depressed and take their lives, whereas the worshippers of the God of the Bible are happier and more engaged in society (https://www.pewresearch.org)

The Psalmist in calling for God to destroy his enemies says let them fall by their own counsels,

Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face. For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue. Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee. (Psalm 5:8-10)

What is it about the kind of thinking of the enemies of God that is their own worst punishment? In their enmity to the servants of God they lose all reason and logical thought, and in this they lose all access to practical wisdom. There is something in the very nature of hate, in the biases that result that prevents clear thinking. The lack of clear thinking leads to harmful policies, that can lead to early death.

But there is more, there is a specific 'nature' of the world where God 'hands-on' interferes in the affairs of humans. From the personal to the national. He says to Israel,

I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it. But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me.
So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels. Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways!
I should soon have subdued their enemies, and turned my hand against their adversaries. (Psalm 81:10-14)

Because the majority of the people of Israel as individuals left their God, He said to them 'I leave you up to the consequences of your own lusts, and I will not fight those that hate you.' It turns out that in the lusts of self, hate is more natural in the world than love. Therefore the very worst thing that can happen to a person is that they are let go to enjoy their own counsels and thinking, as, it is inevitable someone disagrees and they gain an enemy. But without the God of the Bible, they have neither wisdom (which is a defence) nor defence.

The servants of the Living God have a hands-on, day-to-day, hour-to-hour, active defence, but the nature of the world is so designed that iniquity, great sin, turns back itself to eventually harm the unrepentant sinner.

Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law?

But the LORD is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge.

And he shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the LORD our God shall cut them off. (Psalm 94:20,22-23)

The ways of God, the Torah, the often despised Law of Moses, if kept in detail even by an unbeliever deliver benefit to them. Moses said of the Law,

Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. (Deuteronomy 4:6)

Many have counted the costs of not washing and eating unclean food, in the ages past: but further there is much social happiness in the access to the justice of a just law. So to throw this code for punishment for right and wrong away, is to fall into the many issues that a perpetual lack of punishment for crime brings.

This fate is experienced at the level of the individual, and then the community right up to the fate of a Godless nation: If a nation is guided solely by human counsel, it will eventually be consumed in civil strife.

And the sword shall abide on his cities, and shall consume his branches, and devour them, because of their own counsels. (Hosea 11:6)

Many consider the benefits of the Judeo-Christain life, yet do not wish to hear the Word of God. The Apostle Paul goes into detail, as clearly visible then in the affluent Greco- Roman world as it is today! Consider.

Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. (Romans 1:21-32)

God will give people up to their own lusts and that will be the very worst thing that could happen to them, ending any hope of happiness in torture of inescapable envy and strife. In rejecting the Mercy of God, they find that there is no mercy in their world. In rejecting the Covenant of God they find only covenant breakers. In rejecting the Law of God in the Torah they find they are always the victim of lawlessness. In the same city there may be a servant of the living God and they see the evil, but they themselves find mercy and joy.. now why? Because there is a shield about them! Let us ponder:

For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue. Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee.

But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee. For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield. (Psalm 5:9-12)
