Queen of the South: Britain & Arabia

29th November 2010, hej

There has been a subtle shift in the centre of transatlantic power since 2007, from the US to Britain, from New York to London. The Queen of England's visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman revives recollections of the dominant role of Britain in the Southern parts of the Middle East. And Britain has signalled, they are back.

The Queen of the South.

Despite Mecca and Medina, it was not until the mid 1700's that Arabia emerged from the shadow of the Ottomans. The Ottomans had moved so far out of Arabia, in establishing their centre at Constantinople, that they were in Europe. They were so much in Europe that they were part of intrigues of the Great Powers, of whom Britain was one. Then, as now, Britain made a strategic alliance with Arabia, which on Britain's side was motivated by trade.

Trade not oil. It is a mistake to understand Britain's policy now in terms of oil politics.

Oil has made Arabia of importance, but before that their leadership owed some debt to Britain's policy relating to their trade. The modern nation of Saudi Arabia was begun with the Treaty of Jeddah in 1927, when the United Kingdom recognized the rule of King Abdul Aziz, and in return, they would refrain from attacking the neighbouring British Protectorates in Arabia.

And specifically in terms of the significance of the Queen's 2010 visit to the UAE, BBC notes,

The UAE is a collection of seven emirates that united in 1971 after gaining full independence from the UK.
The Duke of York said: "I think you have to look back to the fact this is a long-standing relationship between the UAE and the United Kingdom which reaches back over 40 years when the UAE was a protectorate.
"A lot of work has gone on in the intervening period. Since the new [UK] government came in there's been an increased level of concern for this particular region in terms of investment, in terms of business opportunities.
"This has been reciprocated by the UAE and other countries in the region." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11835776

The emphasis reveals some points. The success of Britain's aristocracy when compared to France's was their willingness to be involved in trade. It seems trade is again in the thought of the Royals, and, by inference, it seems placed there by the new Cameron Government. Take note. Britain is now run by a stockbroker, the descendant of a line of successful stockbrokers and businessmen. Cameron once worked in a shipping office, and he sought corporate board experience to prepare for politics. And more than that he is related to the royals; a fifth cousin of the Queen, no less. Cameron exemplifies the union of aristocracy and trade (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/4502656.stm and Cameron related to Queen). Cameron's directions are increasing the influence of Britain and by extension its royalty, and the union might yet be in the category of that of D'Israeli to Queen Victoria.

The Jerusalem Post notes some historic strategic links, as to why it might be important in 2010,

Britain's historical links to the area stretch back to the 19th century. The UAE became a nation in 1971 after more than 100 years under British protection as part of a truce to protect ships sailing the important trade routes to India.
Britain also played a key role in building the UAE military and other institutions.
The queen last visited the UAE in 1979 before the country underwent a stunning economic expansion that has drawn workers and companies from around the world, including more than 100,000 Britons and 4,000 British businesses.
In Abu Dhabi, the British foreign secretary is expected to sign a number of pacts including a nuclear cooperation accord with Emirati leaders http://www.jpost.com/International/Article.aspx?id=196639

It was for trade with India that Britain protected the UAE. Now India has emerged as a trading power despite its self inflicted experiments in governing since independence in 1947, Britain is again concerned about the trade routes to India. Last time Queen Elizabeth visited, the article implies, her visit helped open doors for international trade, and specifically British based trade. And now according to Andrew her son, the new government has 'an increased level of concern' for the region, and so Queen Elizabeth visits the region, and one wonders if it might be for a greater influence, over a former protectorate. Note also that 'Britain also played a key role in building the UAE military'.

The British parliament are not subtle in expressing their objectives. As Queen Elizabeth and the Duke arrive in Oman, the BBC report,

Speaking in Abu Dhabi, Foreign Secretary William Hague said the visit was a very effective form of diplomacy. The royal trip is part of a government move to renew the UK's relationship with the Gulf Arab states.
Addressing an event celebrating UAE and UK relations, Mr Hague said: "A state visit is a very, very effective means of diplomacy... it's very, very powerful and the Queen is extremely effective at it.
"It puts the highest possible form of seal of approval on government-to-government activity."
Amongst her duties in Abu Dhabi, the Queen unveiled Lord Foster's modern design for the UAE's national museum.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11843072

But they are very subtle in the means they use. A striking museum in the UAE designed by a Briton, also recording the years as Britain's protectorate, seems merely incidental, but it is not. The diplomacy of pictures of Arabian horses is of the type only the British could give and their hosts appreciate,

"To show the Omanis a group of British landscapes painted over the last 250 years is a very important way of promoting the relationship between our two countries."
Earlier the Queen received an official welcome from the Sandhurst-educated Sultan...(our italics) http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11846789

But a real reason for the visit emerges: the shared appreciation of art and culture is gilding to a common issue of trade and... piracy.

A pirate-hunting British frigate has been praised by the Queen during her state visit to the Gulf.
HMS Cornwall is on a six-month deployment to the region to protect shipping in the area.
Cdr Wilkinson said: "It's a huge honour being here. We just happened to be in the area as part of our deployment for the protection of international shipping throughout the area.
"The Queen knew all about our operations and I'm very proud to have met her today. Now we can return to operations with her royal blessing." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11854529

(As an aside Cornwall is the place of tin which exmplifies England's ancient trade). But Piracy is not the only reason for British warships. Dubai is threatened by Iran, due to Dubai's support of British business. Dubai is crucially, Britain's useful business connection to India...The Daily Telegraph UK notes,

The Queen has arrived in Abu Dhabi at the start of a tour of the Gulf intended to strengthen ties with key military and economic allies. ...the visit has taken on an unusually political flavour both with the change of government in Britain and increasing tensions with Iran a short distance away on the other side of the Gulf. Mr Hague set improving relations with the Gulf and India as his first policy goals, and both David Cameron, the prime minister, and Liam Fox, the defence secretary, visited Abu Dhabi within a month of taking office.
With 100,000 British residents of Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the other emirates alone, and a strong British and American military presence, the Ministry of Defence regards a joint approach with the UAE as vital.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/unitedarabemirates/8157963/Queens-Gulf-visit-What-the-Gulf-means-to-the-UK-today.html
To underline the point, the Queen and Prince Philip will watch a fly-past today (Thursday) of Mirage and F16 fighter jets from the UAE Air Force, joined by four RAF Typhoons. The event is ceremonial, to mark the Queen's first visit to the country since 1979, but the Typhoons will be staying on next week along with elements of the Royal Navy for a joint Air Defence drill in the Gulf, http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/unitedarabemirates/8157728/British-foreign-policy-to-change-reflecting-Arab-concerns-on-Middle-East.html

The connection to India and Saudi Arabia is quite important,

Many Britons find themselves spending their week hopping between Saudi Arabia, India and even Africa....
Less openly discussed is the UAE's growing military role. It is no secret, though still not broadcast too widely, that UAE forces serve as part of the allied coalition in Afghanistan, http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/unitedarabemirates/8158038/Queens-Gulf-visit-Britain-and-business-in-the-United-Arab-Emirates.html

The military aspect of the Queens visit is re-iterated,

Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, is not only a schoolfriend of Prince Andrew from Gordonstoun days, he is a graduate of Sandhurst Military Academy. He is also the key mover in the country's strategic positioning as a western ally, regularly meeting leaders including Presidents George Bush and Barack Obama and Prime Minister David Cameron.
Given the confluence of interests, it is hardly surprising that the Foreign Secretary, William Hague, has made cultivating the relationship, which many Emiratis felt dropped off during the premiership of Gordon Brown, his first priority.
It might be unusual for a royal visit to take on a nakedly political flavour, with Mr Hague's words appearing in local newspapers on the day his monarch arrives.
But in this case the ground was prepared by briefings by diplomats. In keeping with the discretion the UAE likes to keep in such matters, he did not mention defence issues directly in his piece for the Dubai English-language newspaper, Gulf News. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/unitedarabemirates/8158038/Queens-Gulf-visit-Britain-and-business-in-the-United-Arab-Emirates.html

Queen Elizabeth, as the leader, is as an active player to strengthen military ties. In a peculiarity of the Commonwealth, the Queen and other Royals are honorary Colonel-in-Chiefs of various regiments. There are in fact two foreign royals who have honorary roles in relationship to British residents, the Queen of Denmark and <the King of Jordan. The Queen is an actual service person from WW2. If UAE's forces are part of the command of British regiments, then, Queen Elizabeth might be said to be

Queen of the South.

More than that the Queen's Britain and the royal leader of the UAE are aligned to face Iran, or Persia to the North.

British Royalty and the Great Game

As the Queen ended her visit, Wikileaks revealed that Prince Andrew was active and patriotic in promoting British business as far afield as the Kyrgyz Republic. He is quoted,

Prince Andrew then turned to regional politics. He stated baldly that "the United Kingdom, Western Europe (and by extension you Americans too") were now back in the thick of playing the Great Game. ...He told the Ambassador that he was a frequent visitor to Central Asia and the Caucasus and had noticed a marked increase in Russian pressure and concomitant anxiety among the locals post-August events in Georgia. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/us-embassy-cables-documents/175722?intcmp=239

Even in that location, mention of business in Saudi Arabia came up, The US ambassador noted,

He railed at British anti-corruption investigators, who had had the "idiocy" of almost scuttling the Al-Yamama deal with Saudi Arabia. (as above)

The Yamama (meaning 'dove') deal is to sell British made weapons and provide British training to Saudi Arabia (see here). A British businessmen commented on the zeal observed,

“What a wonderful representative for the British people! We could not be prouder of our royal family!" (as above)

Winning the Great Game is part of Big Game hunting as Wikileaks also revealed a connection,

The embassy to the gulf state of Abu Dhabi reported in 2003 that military chief Muhammad bin Zayid al-Nahyan was a close friend of Jordan's King Abdullah. "The two frequently hunt – in Morocco and Tanzania – joined, more often than not, by England's Prince Andrew." http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/nov/29/us-embassy-cables-flush-royal-gossip

After nearly 70 years in eclipse, there is a return to a hope for strength in the monarchy. Queen Elizabeth 11 became the longest lived monarch of Britain in 2007 and might become the longest reigning by 2013. It seems her royal ancestry dates back at least to 827 and Egbert of Wessex, the first recognised king of England, and possibly to Cadwaladr ap Cadwallon king of the Britons from 654. But none of this was of use in a world which was turned either republican or communist (or both) with empires everywhere breaking into many nation states. Yet Elizabeth, though holding the waning power inherited from her father lightly, is now held in high esteem, perhaps more as she is a source of stability, to both her family and her nation. In an unstable world, that stability counts for much.

In retrospect the power of empires waned after the first World War. In the most civilized of English behaviour (perhaps having learnt from the American revolution), South Africa and Canada proposed that there be political and diplomatic independence of the Dominions, and the result was the Balfour declaration of 1926.

The Balfour Declaration of 1926 states that the United Kingdom and the Dominions:

"...are autonomous Communities within the British Empire, equal in status, in no way subordinate one to another in any aspect of their domestic or external affairs, though united by a common allegiance to the Crown, and freely associated as members of the British Commonwealth."

Thus a protectorate,or colony, might become an equal, but still in the 'family'. The year 1926 was the year Queen Elizabeth was born, and there seems many things that are providential in her life and accession to the throne, from her role in the WW2, her father being an unexpected king, and to his early death.

It was 1996, exactly 70 years after the 1926 Balfour declaration that Tony Blair began to work for Britain on the world stage and with the Queen's consent they reached out to the pope, breaking the tradition of the monarchy, for gain of trade and position (Blair later revealed as a Catholic).

Now Europe has united, and with Russia establishing hegemony, there is sense a Britain is seeking balance in the alliances of the Commonwealth. While America is appearing weak, Britain is re-emerging as a leader of the Atlantic alliance, and its monarch as one worth hosting.

More, for the benefit of their trade Britain hope, while Europe appears intolerant, to be tolerant.

Her [the Queen's] only engagement of the evening was to pay her respects at the tomb of the UAE's founding father at Abu Dhabi's Grand Mosque, where she was joined by UK Foreign Secretary William Hague and his wife Ffion.
The royal party spent several minutes talking to children who had been learning the Koran.
"This visit by the head of the Church of England to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is reflective of the multi-faith dialogue and tolerance that is common to both the UAE and UK," the British Embassy said.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11835776

We have the head of the Church of England opening to Catholics and Muslims and, perhaps, also to Israel. Britain was very quick to reassure Israel regarding the revelation of the proposed depth of the alliance with the UAE,

The Queen's visit to the United Arab Emirates does not signify a British policy shift away from Israel, the British Embassy in Tel Aviv said in a statement Thursday, in response to a report by The Daily Telegraph.
The embassy stressed that the UK is a "firm friend of Israel and we remain wholly committed to Israel’s security and to helping her reach a peace agreement with the Palestinians."
The British embassy statement also stressed that the UK would not alter policy to reflect Arab concerns. "UK foreign policy on issues in the region - including on the Middle East peace process and Iran - is made on the basis of the UK’s national interest. The UK very much shares Israel's concern over the potential risk posed by a nuclear Iran," the statement read.
One diplomat was quoted by the Telegraph as saying, "We have to respond to what Gulf States want. If we want a long-term partnership on foreign policy, then changes in our stance have to be part of it."
However, the embassy maintained that there was "no contradiction" between strengthening ties with partners in the Gulf, and support of Israel.
http://www.jpost.com/International/Article.aspx?id=196736&newsletter=251110&utm_source=Pulseem&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=Jpost_Newsletter_25/11

In all cases, Britain will act in its national interest.

Fair Britannia and Tyre

What does one call the fair woman Britannia, one who gives up principle and is happy to form relationships with everyone, not because they love them or are ideologically similar, but for financial gain? One might call Britannia a harlot. In just such a way the papacy who goes secretly to all the nations rulers is called in prophecy 'a whore'.

With London returning to have a leading role in global trade, Britain may once again be identified with the traders of Tyre, who of their own feet go to new coasts,

Is this your joyous city, whose antiquity is of ancient days? her own feet shall carry her afar off to sojourn. (Isaiah 23:7) And he said, Thou shall no more rejoice, O thou oppressed virgin, daughter of Zidon: arise, pass over to Chittim; there also shall thou have no rest. (Isaiah 23:12)

From Alexandria, to Venice, to Lisbon, to Amsterdam and then to London, where the aristocracy weathered revolution as they traded and where even its princes were traders,

Tyre, the crowning city, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honourable of the earth? (Isaiah 23:8)

Where they were forgot 70 years (see here) as long as the days of one king (the longest known reign of a king was just over 70 years). After the end of which era they would sing as a harlot. They would take a harp and go about the city. It so happens that Britain's Queen has on her insignia a harp. One 70 year era is from the birth of Elizabeth in 1926 to 1996 when they first act as a harlot nation compromising their protestant faith for gain. The prophecy says after that they would sing as a harlot, to the nations so they would not be forgotten. But Isaiah notes 70 years as the days of a king which historically is the record to beat 70 year reign of a king which suggests not one date but a few

Beginning of Elizabeth's father's reign 1937 to 2007 Britain emerged as a crucial in GFC talks.
Beginning of Elizabeth's military duties 1945 to 2015.
Beginning of royal duties 1951 to 2021.
Beginning of reign 1953 to 2023.

From 2007 we have seen Britain singing to everyone. Isaiah continues,

And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years, that the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her hire, and shall commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth. (Isaiah 23:17)

Everyone. Israel to Turkey, America to Europe and India to China- and from the Kyrgyz Republic to the UAE.

But the end of it is curious,

And her merchandise and her hire shall be holiness to the LORD: it shall not be treasured nor laid up; for her merchandise shall be for them that dwell before the LORD, to eat sufficiently, and for durable clothing. (Isaiah 23:18)

Whereas the 'whore' of Babylon is punished and nothing accepted, the trade of the 'harlot' descendant of Tyre is accepted. This former harlot is even the leader of those who serve the revived kingdom of God, the throne of David in Israel,

Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre. Thou love righteousness, and hate wickedness: therefore God, thy God, has anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.
Kings' daughters were among thy honourable women: upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir. Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear; forget also thine own people, and thy father's house; So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him.
And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift; even the rich among the people shall intreat thy favour. (Psalm 45:6-12)

Thus the merchants or Tyre are represented by a female called the 'daughter of Tyre'. This may be Queen Elizabeth. Elizabeth is from the Hebrew and means 'God is my oath' and is very similar to Bath sheba 'daughter of oath'. The psalm celebrates an event similar to that of the Queen of Sheba who came to Solomon and brought gifts.

But the queen who came to Solomon is not in the New Testament called the Queen of Sheba – but the Queen of the South,

The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. (Matthew 12:42)

Historically Sheba is identified with the kingdom of the Sabeans. Jesus correctly calls Sheba the more general designation 'South'.

Some 10,000 such inscriptions have helped piece together the history of the great incense kingdoms, the first and greatest of which, Saba (or Sheba in Hebrew), is believed to have originated by the early first millennium BC. This date is attested to by the Biblical and Quranic stories of the Queen of Saba’s visit to King Solomon in Jerusalem in the 10th century BC, though scholars continue to search for archeological evidence...
The area held a near monopoly over the production of incense such as frankincense and myrrh, much in demand for ritualistic and traditional uses in the Mediterranean and Fertile Crescent regions far to the north. Enormous caravans made up of hundreds of camels plied the desert carrying this precious commodity, along with other goods brought to the ports of the South from India and Africa. The gold the caravans carried home with them made South very wealthy. Rival kingdoms rose up in the area to challenge Saba, but the trade continued profitably for South until well into the Christian era.

The people of the kingdom mostly in modern Yemen, since that time have dispersed to the North.

Arab legend has it that the collapse of the Marib dam sparked a massive emigration from the area, what is today part of Yemen. These emigrants allegedly settled in great numbers in the north , eventually drifting with the Islamic conquest....
sometime in the political and economic chaos of the late 6th century AD, the dam ruptured, never to be repaired. Marib’s once prosperous inhabitants disappeared, abandoning the land to nomads in search of pasture for their livestock. http://phoenicia.org/sabaeans.html#ixzz16ScI5ExP

The Queen, called the daughter of Tyre, then need not be queen of Yemen, but certainly will be queen of the South. A Queen in relationship to Arabia. The 'daughter of Tyre' singular and a woman, acts in the same way and at the same time as “the kings of Tarshish”. Not one king, but many, such as are contained in the Commonwealth (There are 16 Commonwealth realms, but also 33 republics and 5 have monarchs of diverse royal houses).

A Psalm for Solomon. Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king's son. He shall judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with judgment. The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness. He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor. They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations. He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth. In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endures. He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth. They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust. The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts. Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him. (Psalm 72:1-11)

The psalm indicates that the merchants of Tarshish, Sheba and Seba are first and most notable to give power to the king who is to reigns with a glory greater than Solomon. All kings fall before him, but it is those of Tarshish who are quick to bring gifts. It makes sense if they are grateful.

The giving of gifts might also give a sense of awe of the power of God and repentance having been judged.

For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low: And upon all the cedars of Lebanon, that are high and lifted up, and upon all the oaks of Bashan, And upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up, And upon every high tower, and upon every fenced wall, And upon all the ships of Tarshish, and upon all pleasant pictures. (Isaiah 2:12-16)
and it is confirmed,
Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King. God is known in her palaces for a refuge. For, lo, the kings were assembled, they passed by together. They saw it, and so they marvelled; they were troubled, and hasted away. Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as of a woman in travail. Thou break the ships of Tarshish with an east wind. (Psalm 48:2-7)

Tarshish was two places. One was accessed from Ezion Geber, via the Red Sea trading gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks (2Ch 9:21) which corresponds with India. It is of note that Britain is being drawn into the Middle East now in 2010 due to British trade in Dubai- focussed on links to Saudi Arabia and, specifically, India, which is Tarshish. The other Tarshish was accessed via the Mediterranean from Joppa and Tyre.

Tarshish was thy [Tyre's] merchant by reason of the multitude of all kind of riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded in thy fairs. (Ezekiel 27:12).

It is well known even to ancient writers that tin used in the Mediterranean came from Britain.

Herodotus as early as 445 BC speaks of the British Isles as the Tin Islands or Cassiterides. Pytheas (352-323 BC) mentions the tin trade, as does also Polybius (circa 160). Diodorus Siculus gives a detailed description of the trade. He tells us that the tin was mined, beaten into squares, and carried to an island called Ictis, joined to the mainland at low tide, which is generally held to be Mount St. Michael in Cornwall, http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/geoghist/histories/oldcivilization/phoenicia/britmines/britmines.html

This source quotes a source who believed that metal from Britain may have been used in Solomon's Temple. Cornwall is known for tin, copper, zinc, lead and iron with some silver. http://www.cornwall-calling.co.uk/mines.htm

There is evidence of a connection to Phonecian Tyre http://www.trevithick-society.org.uk/industry/cornish_history.htm

The ships of Tarshish did sing of thee in thy [Tyre's] market: and you were replenished, and made very glorious in the midst of the seas. (Ezekiel 27:25)

It is was a characteristic that the traders sang as they sailed

the first written reference I learned of regarding nautical 'chanteying' as we know it today, -- with a lead singer (chanteyman) coordinating the work of singing mariners by means of a rhythmic song -- appears in 1493. Felix Fabri, a Dominican friar, sailed from Germany to Palestine aboard a Venetian galley and he described, "mariners who sing when work is going on -- -- [There is] a concert between one who sings out orders and the laborers who sing in response." http://www.ancientmarinersct.com/chantey.html
“I soon got used to this singing, for the sailors never touched a rope without it” Herman Melville, Redburn, chapter 9 (1849) http://www.jsward.com/shanty/index.shtml

From the Guardian.uk 2007

I have always associated sea shanties with the folk-song revival and with a kind of English nationalism and naval nostalgia http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2007/apr/21/featuresreviews.guardianreview17

Such is the nostalgia that, in March 2010

A GROUP of sailors from Cornwall in southwest England has landed a major record deal after a music executive heard them singing sea shanties in a local pub. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/breaking-news/singing-fisherman-land-record-deal/story-e6frf7jx-1225842613925

Therefore indeed traditional sea songs will go once again from Britain to the world.

If the Commonwealth now is a mere association of nations, and Britain returns also to an association with Arabia as a link to India, we have a situation where the two Tarshish nations are connected, where the leading role is played by a Queen who might truly represent the whole, as the 'daughter of Tyre'. And it is perhaps not a small point that the consort of that Queen is the son of a Greek speaking king styled Prince of Greece and Denmark, whose greatest influence might be from a school, whose motif is a Phonecian warship, run by a Jew blending ancient Greek culture with Etonian and who is a sailor.

The future Alliance

Israel need perhaps not be too worried regarding the special alliance of Tarshish (Britain and India) with Arabia, as it will not be in contradiction with Israel's role. It is emerging that Arabia's leaders share the concern of Israel regarding Iran.

We see in world events now the issue which will unite Tarshish with Sheba and Arabia.. a question asked of the king of the North,

And thou [Gog] shalt say, I will go up to the land [the mountains of Israel] of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates, To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.
Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil? (Ezekiel 38:11-13)

It is clear Arabia and the merchants of Britain and India and all their 'young lions' are going to be as concerned as any at Gog's aims. It is to be noted they protest for reasons of the northern 'spoil' or gain. They aren't interested in Israel's safety, for Israel's sake. But they seem very prepared to pay respects. It is observed of those that will come to the glory of Zion that,

Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows? (Isaiah 60:8)
Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of the LORD thy God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because he has glorified thee. (Isaiah 60:9)

These that fly (Emirates, possibly), those of the ships of Tarshish are mentioned in company with Midian, Sheba and Kedar (Arabia). These haste to bring Jews back to Jerusalem, and more than that encourage them to take their gold with them. Isaiah adds that those that go out to bring Jews back, declare God's glory to those in the isles they go out to.

For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory. And I will set a sign among them, and I will send those that escape of them unto the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, that draw the bow, to Tubal, and Javan, to the isles afar off, that have not heard my fame, neither have seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles. And they shall bring all your brethren for an offering unto the LORD out of all nations upon horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and upon mules, and upon swift beasts, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, saith the LORD, as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the LORD. (Isaiah 66:18-20)

After the Greek-like people left ancient Tyre to trade in Alexandria (now London), Tyre and Sidon were taken over by others, who are allied to Palestine. After the revealing of Zion's glory those of the daughter of ancient Tyre, those of Tarshish haste to ship Jews from the Isles, but at the same time those now of Tyre and Sidon are shipped out – to the Sabeans

Yea, and what have ye to do with me, O Tyre, and Zidon, and all the coasts of Palestine? will ye render me a recompence? and if ye recompense me, swiftly and speedily will I return your recompence upon your own head; Because ye have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried into your temples my goodly pleasant things: The children also of Judah and the children of Jerusalem have ye sold unto the Grecians, that ye might remove them far from their border. Behold, I will raise them out of the place where you have sold them, and will return your recompence upon your own head: And I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the children of Judah, and they shall sell them to the Sabeans, to a people far off: for the LORD has spoken it. (Joe 3:4-8)

Those of Tarshish are taking Jews back in Isaiah because, as Joel reveals, Tyre, Sidon and Palestine had sold them to the Grecians (who in the modern world do have many ships). To move Jews out of the Holy Land is the stated aim of the 'palestinians'. But note the symmetry in that after this Judah sell those of Tyre, Sidon and Palestine to the Sabeans. The so called 'palestinans' who survive will be sold as servants to South Arabia and possibly Ethiopia.

Sheba and Dedan are related to Israel, as they were from sons of Abraham's concubine. But if Sheba were Cushites from Sheba and became the Sabeans they migrated out of Yemen, to the North. The Sabean kingdom did encompass part of Africa south of Egypt, and they too are mentioned, as bringing labour and merchandise,

I have raised him up in righteousness [the king at Zion], and I will direct all his ways: he shall build my city, and he shall let go my captives, not for price nor reward, saith the LORD of hosts. Thus saith the LORD, The labour of Egypt, and merchandise of Ethiopia [Cush] and of the Sabeans, men of stature, shall come over unto thee, and they shall be thine: they shall come after thee; in flash of fire they shall come over, and they shall fall down unto thee, they shall make supplication unto thee, saying, Surely God is in thee; and there is none else, there is no God. (Isaiah 45:13-14)

Saudi Arabia and USA

Wikileaks has revealed that Saudi Arabia might be more keen to be allied to the US than to Iran, and more aligned with Israel's aims on this issue that with the US.

The cable quotes former Saudi Ambassador to the US Adel al-Jubeir recalling, "the King's frequent exhortations to the US to attack Iran and so put an end to its nuclear weapons program. 'He told you to cut off the head of the snake,' he recalled to the Charge, adding that working with the US to roll back Iranian influence in Iraq is a strategic priority for the King and his government." http://www.jpost.com/IranianThreat/News/Article.aspx?id=197114

One can see how with US displaying what appears to be weakness in leadership that Saudi Arabia would turn to the British. Often before prophecy is fulfilled events seem on the surface counter to the prophecy, yet if we know the end, all the hints are there. However, Wikileaks reveals what was hidden.

Egypt and USA's power.

As part of the pattern, but not conclusive, Egypt is becoming dependent on US wheat, at a time when Russia can't supply the market due to weather as an 'act of God'.

A significantly poorer rice crop in Egypt was seen as part of the reason, the Egyptian Gazette reported last week.
Wet weather in Canada and a drought in Russia and Eastern Europe also played a part in reducing global inventories as compared to those a year earlier.

Napoleon's Soldier's buried: Russia, Lithuania and the EU

It is entirely symbolic that on the same day America's standing is damaged that they bury 18 of Napoleon's infantry in Lithuania, with the French present.

Napoleon himself escaped from Vilnius, deserting his men, only days before Russian forces recaptured the city.

At the same time Lithuania is the Battle ground of the European Comission and Russia/Germany

Russia had recently completed a major deal with the country (Lithuania) in which Gazprom, Russia's state-run gas company, aquired Lithuanian distribution rights. According the the new directive, the "Third Energy Package", the deal will be tossed out.
“Our companies, together with German partners, legally acquired distribution assets in Lithuania,” Putin said at an economics forum in Berlin. “Now they are being thrown out there with reference to the Third Energy Package. What is this then? What is this robbery?” http://www.baltictimes.com/news/articles/27424/
