It was written that,
For I will lay the land most desolate.. and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, that none shall pass through. (Ezekiel 33:28)
It was so desolate that in 1915 even the symapthetic Herbert Samuel to Asquith wrote of the Land being "much of it barren mountain and part of it waterless." Asquith wrote, "He [Samuel] thinks we might plant in this not very promising territory about three or four million European Jews."
When the Jewish National Fund bought land in Judah (Judea) in the area called Gush Etzion (Etzion Block) they planted many trees. The photos show how barren and empty the mountains of Israel really were as late as 1945. The first photo is Massu'ot Yitzhak, Judea sometime just after 1945. The second is from 1947.
But Ezekiel then goes on to say,
I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country. I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie in a good fold, and in a fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel. I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord GOD... I will feed them with judgment. (Ezekiel 34:13-16)
Compare the state of the ground to that taken in the same location recently below.
Specifically it is written of the controversy over the mountains, speaking of our era,
Therefore, ye mountains of Israel, to the desolate wastes.. which became a prey and derision to the residue of the heathen that are round about; Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Surely in the fire of my jealousy have I spoken against the residue of the heathen, and against all Idumea, which have appointed my land into their possession with the joy of all their heart, with despiteful minds, to cast it out for a prey.
Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I have spoken in my jealousy and in my fury, because ye have borne the shame of the heathen: Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I have lifted up mine hand, Surely the heathen that are about you, they shall bear their shame. But ye, O mountains of Israel, ye shall shoot forth your branches, and yield your fruit to my people of Israel; for they are at hand to come. For, behold, I am for you, and I will turn unto you, and ye shall be tilled and sown: And I will multiply men upon you, all the house of Israel, even all of it: and the cities shall be inhabited, and the wastes shall be builded: (Ezekiel 36:4-10)
Jews have built cities on only about 1% of the land on the mountians, and the nations wish to stop them building further for hate and 'despite'. Yet where they have built they are beginning to yield fruit (see here)
Ezekiel says plainly it is not because of Jewish merit, "Therefore say unto the house of Israel," Thus saith the Lord GOD; "I do not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for mine holy name's sake, which ye have profaned among the heathen, where ye went." (Ezekiel 36:22)
Knowing that the Great Creator has proclaimed these things to Ezekiel, and seeing the 'despite' and hate of the nations, and knowing at that time of hate God will gather the Jews to the mountains of Israel to feed them and cause them to lie down
what might we be able to do?"
The Land of Promise Foundation in the USA (which is related to the American Jewish National Fund) and the Gush Etzion Foundation wish to develop existing teaching facilities in a former Kibbutz at Old Masu'ot Yitzhak (Hebrew: מְשּׂוּאוֹת יִצְחָק, lit. Isaac's Beacons), to expand for programs to teach Jews about their heritage in the Land promised to Abraham.

This is the word by which we live (Matt, Luke 4:4) and so is how Jews could be fed. Masu'ot Yitzhak is half way between Hebron and Jerusalem on the edge of the mountains overlooking the plain to the sea.
