To move heaven and earth: Economic confidence

5th February 2009, hej

Does faith have anything to do with the economy? This present crisis shows it does. Business “confidence” is a measure of an economy. Kevin Rudd the Prime minister of Australia describes the answer to Australian loss of confidence as a need 'to move heaven and earth'.

To move heaven and earth speaks of God's power,

Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations of heaven moved and shook, because he was wroth. (2Sa 22:8)

This analogy seeks the benefit of faith. Faith is needed to “move mountains”,

Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, if you have faith, and don’t doubt.. even if you told this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ it would be done. All things, whatever you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”(Matthew 21:21-22)

For years now some leaders in society have been eroding western society's faith. Religious leaders have questioned the events recorded in the Bible, some to the point of making it a mere parable, and so undermining faith. If the Exodus was not a simple description of events, then there can be no faith in anything written. If the account of Genesis is not a true account in all points, then Jesus who endorsed it, cannot be believed and so there is no salvation in Jesus' resurrection,

But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: ... If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. (1Cor. 15:13-19)

The attack on the Bible was extended to science. God was defined out of science. But if science is the only knowledge and nothing can be proved, as a theory may be falsified, there is nothing a person can have faith in.

Many in the world have been reduced to having no faith, or confidence, in anything.

Now leaders ask these people to have faith in their economic reforms. The campaign to discredit the Bible had to be so powerful it had to attack the very basis of human faith and trust. This has paid dividends:

Investment in an economy requires faith in a future. When there is no faith there is no investment.

Leaders such as Barak Obama call for self-sacrifice, but if there is no faith in God's reward there is no reason to sacrifice self.

Those who accept the historical events recounted in the Bible from Genesis as fact, can develop confidence and faith in a Power greater than the natural forces of the earth. If God will do what he has promised and can be relied on and trusted, then there is a great hope for the earth.

Let all the nations be gathered together... who among them can declare this, and show us former things? let them bring forth their witnesses, that they may be justified: or let them hear, and say, It is truth. You are my witnesses, says the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that you may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour. (Isaiah 43:7-11)

The faithful can see the miracles of the past as evidence for faith in a good future for the earth.

People who are optimistic about the future are also the basis of a good economy. Until society finds faith the economy will not be good.
